ROLAND, Okla. – A 1-year-old Fort Smith, Ark., girl who was shot while riding in a getaway car following a robbery in Oklahoma has died.

Sequoyah County Sheriff Ron Lockhart said Elaine Keene died on March 1 at Arkansas Children’s Hospital after being shot in the head on Feb. 27.

He said the girl was in the car driven by her mother who took two teenagers to a home near Roland. Lockhart said the teenagers robbed and beat 21-year-old Cherokee Nation citizen Devin Jeremiah, then got into the car as the woman drove away.

He said Jeremiah opened fire at the car with one shot hitting the girl in the head.

Nineteen-year-old Michael Clemente of Fort Smith and a 17-year-old boy have been arrested on robbery charges. The mother’s name has not been released.

Prosecutors are reviewing the case for possible additional charges.
