Sequoyah student wins top prize in art show
By Staff Reports MUSKOGEE, Okla. – For the second consecutive year, Sequoyah Schools student Lisan Blair won Best of Show at the Five Civilized Tribes Museum’s Student Art Show. Blair’s sculpture of two white buffaloes is titled “Brothers.” The awards were given on Feb. 27 at the museum. Artwork from 75 students were slated to be displayed through the end of March.Sequoyah senior Roxanne Harmon took home the Willard Stone Memorial Award in sculpture/woodcarving for her depiction of “Seven Clans.” Other winners were as follows.Painting and drawing:
• Grade seven – Devin Deeringwater of Morris Schools, “Creek Dancer,” first; Kailyn Drinnon of Morris Schools, “Wolf Clan,” second; Michelle Holiman of Maryetta School, “Terripan,” third.
• Grade eight – Paige Fourkiller of Maryetta School, “Cherokee Family,” first; Mariah Hooper of Maryetta School, “Sequoyah Teaches the Syllabary,” second; and Pancie Grimmit of Maryetta School, “Cherokee Pots,” third.
• Grade nine – Brodey Nelson of Fort Gibson School, “Generations,” first; Chelsea Potts of Morris School, “Little Bow Hunter,” second; and Chelsea Lunsford of Ketchum School, “Creek Stomp Dance,” third.
• Grade 10 – Colt Tiger of Glenpool School, “Rvfo Rakko,” first; Christy Tiger of Sequoyah School, “Losing My Traditions,” second; and Bryson Knox of Ketchum, “The Mighty Three Cherokees,” third.
• Grade 11 – Cara Marin, “Peace Talks,” first; Christian Patton of Stigler Schools, “The Good Life,” second; and Logan Billy of Stigler, “Buffalo Rock,” third.
• Grade 12 – Danyelle Snow of Grove Schools, “Daughter of the Chief,” first; Channenna Hanneha of Stigler School, “Never Let Go,” second; and Justin Hendrix of Stigler School, “Good Ol’ Will,” third.
Basketry:
• Grade seven – Mason Vann, first; Tyler Panther, second; and Manay McCarter, third, all from Kenwood Schools.
