Former Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller cancels speech
By Staff Reports TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – According to Cherokee Nation Communications, former Principal Chief Wilma Mankiller has canceled a speaking engagement scheduled for March 5 at the third bi-annual CN Cancer Summit in Tulsa. Mankiller was set to be the keynote speaker at the event. Charlie Soap, Mankiller’s husband, announced on March 2 in a news release that Mankiller has been diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer. Mankiller, 64, served as the tribe’s principal chief from 1985 until retiring in 1995.
