Cherokee Heritage Center celebrates Indian Territory Days
By CN Communications
PARK HILL, Okla. – The Cherokee Heritage Center will host Indian Territory Days on March 25 and 26.
Kindergarten through 12th grade students will have the opportunity to experience Cherokee culture with a particular focus on the late 1800s prior to Oklahoma statehood. The program is designed for school-aged children and provides an excellent venue for a field trip that is both educational and entertaining.
Indian Territory Days will offer students an unforgettable experience in Adams Corner Rural Village. This 19th century rural village is comprised of relocated and reconstructed historic structures that were typical in rural towns in the Cherokee Nation at that time. Trained interpreters located at nine cultural stations offer unique experiences that help illustrate both continuity and change in Cherokee culture.
The cultural stations include storytelling and oral traditions, basketry, blowgun shooting, chunkey (a traditional Cherokee game), Cherokee marbles, a Cherokee Language lesson (at the schoolhouse) and a “touch and feel” table. After visiting these stations students will experience a tour of the Trail of Tears exhibition inside the museum.
The admission price of $5 per student includes the event and all attractions. The programming will take place continuously from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cherokee Heritage Center. The same activities are conducted on both days. All chaperoning adults admitted free.
