Cherokee National Treasure Todum Hair dies at 93

SALINA, Okla. – Cherokee National Treasure Todum Hair of Salina passed away March 3 in Tulsa at the age of 93.
Hair was one of the first recipients of the Cherokee National Treasure honor in 1987. He was a well-known artist and craftsman and was known best for his fish and crawfish gigs.
Friend said he never met a stranger and loved to visit with anyone within listening distance. He also loved participating in powwows and parades.
Hair lived in the Wickliffe community in Mayes County most of his lifetime. He worked as a laborer. He married Annie Peters, who preceded him in death in 2009.
Hair was born Feb. 1, 1917, in Topsy to Nicholas and Molly (Scuggins) Hair. Brother Woody Hair; sons Andy Hair, Andrew Hair and Earl Hair; daughters Anita Childers, Juanita Bark, Sandra Roy and Ann Matlock; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren survive him.
In addition to his wife, his parents, brothers Joe, Houston, Yahola, Ned, Frank and Sequoyah Hair; sister Rachael Hair; son Richard Chewey; and grandson Todd Bark preceded him in death.
Funeral services for Hair were held March 6 at the Wickliffe School gymnasium. Officiating were pastors Guy Soldier and Chester Crittenden. He was buried at the Euwasha Cemetery.
