Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition application deadline extended
By STAFF REPORTS
TAHLEQUAH, Okla. – The application deadline for the 2010 Miss Cherokee Leadership Competition has been extended to July 30.
The competition offers young Cherokee women the opportunity to represent their Nation and receive higher education scholarships, recognition and the experience of a lifetime, said organizers.
This year’s competition will take place at 7 p.m., Aug. 28 at Cornerstone Fellowship, which is located at 718 Pendleton St.
Miss Cherokee contestants compete annually for a $3,000 grand prize scholarship. The first runner-up receives a $2,000 scholarship and the second runner-up gets a $1,000 scholarship. The winner can also look forward to a year of travel to many events and places.
To be eligible to compete, contestants must be a Cherokee Nation citizen between the ages of 17 and 22 before Aug. 28 and be at least one-quarter Cherokee. Application packets must include all required documents and must be postmarked no later than July 30.
Miss Cherokee Leadership contestants will be judged in several categories such as interview, platform presentation, social skills, tribal knowledge and use of the Cherokee language.
Participants in the competition will be asked to show their leadership attributes by demonstrating knowledge of cultural activities and skills, a history of community service and leadership and the desire to share those qualities with the public in a gracious, professional manner.
