ROBBINSVILLE, N.C. - About 60 people, including Cherokees from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians and the Cherokee Nation, took part in a walk on June 20 to commemorate the removal of Cherokees from the area now known as Robbinsville, N.C.
The annual seven-mile Trail of Tears Walk was also held to raise money for a scholarship, which is given to a Cherokee student.
In 1838, U.S. Army troops cut a narrow road from the Cheoah Valley near Robbinsville up and over a mountain, which they used to move about 300 Cherokees to Fort Delaney. Remnants of the road can still be seen today.
