TAHLEQUAH — Cherokee Nation’s election commission set a hearing date of 9 a.m. May 17 to address complaints lodged against principal chief candidate David Walkingstick.

The commission’s unanimous vote on May 10 was made following two hours behind closed doors with its attorney, and came a day after Attorney General Todd Hembree turned over an investigative memorandum related the complaints that allege Walkingstick violated CN election law.

The probe by the AG’s office and Marshal Service was conducted based on complaints filed by Chelsea Huber and Elizabeth Stroud in April. The list of complaints include allegations that Walkingstick failed to list all monetary or in-kind donations in financial reports and illegally used a limited liability company to funnel money into his campaign.

Hembree noted that “evidence will have to be judged by the Cherokee Nation Election Commission, but the Attorney General recommends that a hearing be set to determine whether in-kind contributions made by Cherokees for Change, LLC were made in connection with the Walkingstick campaign. If Walkingstick did accept illegal in-kind contributions from Cherokees for Change, LLC, he would be subject to disqualification.”
