IHS Dental Externship Program accepting applications
WASHINGTON – Dental students looking to gain clinical experience, develop clinical skills under supervision and contribute to an interdisciplinary team of health care professionals, then they may want to apply for the Indian Health Service’s 2020 Dental Externship Program.
As part of the IHS Division of Oral Health, class of 2021 dental students can apply until Feb. 29 to possibly earn an externship at an Indian health facility, according to the IHS website.
“You can apply to fulfill a dental externship during the summer before your final year of dental school,” the website states.
Externships take place every year between May 1 and Sept. 30, according to the website. Lengths vary, but typically range from two to four weeks.
“Each facility offers comprehensive dental practice experience and most are located within some of the most beautiful and recreational locations in the continental United States and Alaska,” the website states. “As a dental extern, the knowledge you’ll obtain about public health dentistry will enable you to make an informed career choice in the months before graduation. What’s more, you’ll have an opportunity to establish relationships with mentors and dental health professionals who could open doors for your career.”
According to the website, accepted students will also have an opportunity to decide whether working in non-typical clinical settings, being mentored by an experienced staff and having an opportunity to provide much-needed care to a medically underserved patient population is their calling.
The website also states that an Indian health dental career offers students a chance to work in state-of-the-art facilities with “excellent” pay and benefits and eligibility for financial freedom through the IHS Loan Repayment Program.
