Cherokee Nation makes temporary changes to its services

TAHLEQUAH – The Cherokee Nation has made necessary changes, per tribal and Centers for Disease Control guidelines, amid the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure the safety of tribal citizens and employees by placing restrictions on available services.
“As we take on the challenge of dealing with COVID-19 two things are clear: first, Cherokee Nation government must continue to function to serve our citizens. Second, we must keep our workplace safe,” Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. said in a March 18 video update. “This means not only keeping our government buildings clean and sanitary, but also reducing the number of visitors to our buildings and reducing the number of employees in those buildings.”
Food Distribution’s temporary changes include limiting clients in lobbies and stores, introducing curbside pickup for clients 65 years and older and making home deliveries to elders who are not able to visit Food Distribution sites.
These processes may change based on recommendations from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Staff will be on site to help with these changes, CN officials said.
Via the tribe’s Facebook page, the Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation is also introducing temporary changes to its services.
Those who make payments will receive letters in the mail, with postage-paid return envelopes, asking them to mail in their payments. They will receive receipts and another postage-paid return envelopes through the mail.
All HACN apartment tenants will receive similar notices on their doors outlining the process with an option for elders to contact the HACN to request for staff to pick up their payments. And late deadlines are extended 10 days for mailed in payments.

Registration applications were only being taken by mail through March 31. All Registration Department walk-in services, including photo IDs, are suspended, per the tribe’s Facebook page.

CN officials also said tag offices are encouraging citizens to use the online tag renewal option as all offices have temporarily closed as of March 23. Online renewals are for regular vehicles, motorcycles, travel trailers and personalized tags for those vehicles. To renew, visit http://tagoffice.cherokee.org/online-tag-renewal/

Career Services will be closing to the public all offices and conducting services by phone and email. Each office location has established central locations for clients to drop off timesheets, pick up cards and other needed services. GED classes and training have been suspended.
Concerning CN employees and facilities, the Fleet Service Center suspended operations on March 20. And to keep fluent speakers safe and informed, CN officials have created a hotline called the Cherokee Speakers hotline (1-539-234-4040) for those who have questions about COVID-19 or need assistance.
Other changes include senior nutrition sites taking to-go orders, student clothing vouchers being handled by mail, fax or email and processing college scholarships will be strictly web-based, Hoskin said.
All other CN office closings, as of March 23, include the Tahlequah Child Development Center, Human Services, Election Commission and the Veterans Center. Services for those departments are being conducted online and by phone, according to a CN email.
“These measures reflect the kind of steps that I encourage all citizens to take in their daily lives as we make sacrifices and work together to slow and stop the spread of COVID-19,” he said.For Food Distribution information, call:
