MIAMI, Okla. – The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently approved a memorandum of understanding between the Cherokee Nation and Inter-Tribal Council Inc. leaders that will allow for better access to the tribe’s Food Distribution Program for CN citizens living in Miami.

Tribal citizens living in Miami were previously excluded from participation in tribal Food Distribution programs because the city is deemed an urban area due to a population of greater than 10,000.

The ITC, which consists of the Miami, Modoc, Ottawa, Peoria, Quapaw, Shawnee, Seneca-Cayuga, Eastern Shawnee and Wyandotte tribes, serves tribal citizens in Miami. However, the ITC can only serve clients within its jurisdiction in the northern area of Miami.

The USDA-approved memorandum allows the CN to serve its tribal citizens living in the southern area of Miami. The USDA waiver and memorandum between the CN and the ITC fills a service gap area of an estimated 1,202 tribal citizens in Miami, according to 2010 Census information.

“We are so appreciative of the Inter-Tribal Council’s willingness to work together in order to best serve all tribal citizens in the city of Miami,” Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin Jr. said. “The food distribution program can mean everything to a family, and it is so great that we will be able to now extend that blessing to tribal citizens living within our tribe’s jurisdiction in Miami.”

Qualifying households in the southern area of Miami will receive assistance from the tribe’s Food Distribution center in Jay. The Jay location serves approximately 1,000 households per month, including clients in Ottawa County.
