Cherokee Nation offering WIC clients in Vinita temporary alternate vendors

VINITA – The Cherokee Nation is advising its Women, Infants and Children clients in Vinita to get their supplies from a vendor list of more than 60 while the tribe works with the Vinita Walmart and Carter’s Food Center to determine why machines recently stopped processing WIC cards.

The CN Vinita Health Center has 175 clients who participate in the WIC program
.
The tribe’s WIC program is a federally funded program that provides pregnant or nursing women, infants and children 5 years old and younger with healthy food from WIC-authorized grocery stores.

The tribe issues all of its WIC clients a debit-like WIC card with a chip. The WIC cards are processed at all other Walmart stores and vendors in the CN’s jurisdiction without issue.

“We’re not sure why we are having trouble in these two locations, but Cherokee Nation Health Administration is aware and working with our IT department and these two locations to resolve this so that our clients can have convenient options to pick up their necessary supplies,” Health Services Executive Director Dr. Charles Grim said. “It’s important that our youngest Cherokee citizens have the milk, formula and other nutritional necessities they need, so we encourage families to use these other vendors until machines process the cards at the two locations.”
