OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma Historical Society Research Division staff recently completed a searchable database of Dawes Commission town site records, which are now available for free online.

The records contain petitions for the removal of restrictions on land for town site purposes. Included in the files are questionnaires, plat maps and correspondence. Most files also include legal land descriptions. The files are organized by town within each tribal nation, including the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Muscogee (Creek) nations. There are only a few files per town and not all towns are represented. The files date from 1903-09 and can be found in the OHS Indian Archives Collection, Dawes Commission Records.

To search these records, enter the name of an individual. This database includes 467 names of individuals in the Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw and Muscogee (Creek) nations.

The OHS Research Center offers a $15 express service for orders from this database. To order copies of a listing by mail, use the printable order form found at www.okhistory.org and include the information provided in the index. To order by phone call 405-522-5225.
