ADAIR, Okla. – While many students are anxiously preparing for their first day of college in August, Cherokee Nation citizen Rowdy Malchow has calmly deferred his enrollment to Oklahoma State University to study abroad in Chile.

In February, the Adair High School senior was selected for a $20,000 study abroad scholarship from the Tulsa-based Rotary District 6110 and will spend a year serving as an ambassador with 10 other students.

“I hate to sound bigheaded, but I was pretty sure I was going to get it,” Malchow said. “It meant a lot just because the rotary, to reiterate what they said, just applying to get the scholarship puts you at the top 1 percent of your peers and then being accepted puts you at another 1 percent of your peers. So just doing all the hard work and getting all the recommendations, doing all the essays, making the trip so you can go be interviewed, just jumping through all the hoops is kind of, is what they wanted. They wanted someone who was really serious about it.”

He became involved with the rotary through his school counselor, who selected him to attend the Rotary Youth Leaders of America camp in 2015 because of his leadership qualities. It was those qualities and his commitment that carried him throughout the approximately five-month application process.

“I first started out with just having to fill out essay after essay about why I wanted to go on exchange, why I think I’m good for exchange,” he said. “I had to pass all these background checks, and I had to be interviewed by the local rotary district first to see if I was worthy of going on to the next level of interviews.”

The next level was speaking with Rotary District 6110, which encompassed students from Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Arkansas and required them to complete an interview in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

“I had to spend the whole weekend down there (Fayetteville), and I just went from everything from getting dental evaluations to see if I was healthy enough to go, psychologically evaluated by the psychologist they had there,” Malchow said. “I had to speak to teachers and parents, even students who had gone on exchange and they rate you through their program of whether or not you’re a good candidate for the exchange.”

By the time of his selection, he had completed more than 33 hours of interviews.

“Those interviews span from everything of what my understanding of current events are, how our nation handles those policies so I can best represent the country, whether or not I’m mature enough to go on exchange for a year,” he said, “and just being really well-rounded and open-minded still because you’re there to represent not only the club that sent you, but kind of your country when you’re the only one there.”

In addition to his ambassadorship while abroad, he will work to bridge the gap between kindergarteners at Adair and in Chile through web chats.

“A lot of kids, well the little kids, they don’t ever think about other countries and how they go to school and what they do, and so I think the children won’t be able to communicate that well with each other, but I think it will be interesting for them to see each other at least,” he said.

Malchow is finalizing his visa with the Chilean Embassy and taking Spanish lessons on top of preparing to lead a community service project with his fellow ambassadors before departing this summer.

Once Malchow returns to the United States in 2017, he plans to attend OSU to study international business or entrepreneurship at the Spears School of Business.

Tax-deductible donations to help Malchow defray costs can be made via mail to Pryor Rotary Club c/o Rowdy Malchow II P.O. Box 564 Adair OK 74330.
