TAHLEQUAH – The Cherokee Nation honored four veterans with the tribe’s Medal of Patriotism award during the July 15 Tribal Council meeting.

Jack Buffington, 80, of Rogers, Arkansas; Roy Brown, 68, of Stilwell; Conn Davis, 72, of South Coffeyville; and James Smith, 68, of South Coffeyville, were recognized by Principal Chief Bill John Baker and Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden for their service and sacrifice to the country.

Rear Adm. Buffington was born in 1938 and enlisted in the Navy in 1961. Buffington completed his first six tours with the Seabees with the Naval Mobile Command Battalion-9. Later, Buffington served in the Naval Facilities Engineering Command and was deployed to the Philippine Islands. He also served as a commanding officer of the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion-1 before he honorably retired in 1995 with various medals and awards.

“I deeply appreciate the Cherokee Nation and everything that your people do,” Buffington said. “You have the greatest reputation anywhere in the world and of any tribe, and it is because of the hard work of all the people here tonight.”

Sgt. Brown was born in 1950 and enlisted in the Army in 1970. After boot camp, Brown served as a helicopter mechanic and eventually deployed to the Republic of Vietnam where he served under the 235th Attack Helicopter Company in Can Tho, Vietnam, as well as several other posts in Vietnam. Brown was honorably discharged in 1972.

Sgt. Davis was born in 1946 and enlisted in the Air Force in 1967. Davis served at duty stations in Texas and Illinois as a teletype message center and eventually was deployed to the Philippine Islands. During his military career, Davis served several tours in Vietnam and also served in Thailand and South Korea. In 1971, Davis was honorably discharged.

Sgt. 1st Class Smith was born in 1950 and enlisted in the Army in 1970. Smith served as a noncommissioned officer and was tasked with refueling helicopters flying in and out of South and North Korea in the demilitarized zone. During his military career, Smith served five overseas tours, including service in Korea and Egypt. Later, Smith also served in Operation Desert Storm and the Persian Gulf War. After 27 years of active duty and serving in the reserves, he was honorably discharged in 2010.
