STILWELL – At Stomping Grounds Coffee & Cakery, coffee and friends make the perfect blend.
“When I first came here, I asked where all the coffee was, and all I was told was that there wasn’t any,” Lisa Bailey, Stomping Grounds Coffee & Cakery owner, said. “I actually said, ‘we’re going to fix that.’”
In April 2017, the business opened its doors. It started from seed money saved and with investments from Bailey’s family and friends. However, before the opening, Bailey found that there was no drainage system functioning in the eatery. The discovery was going to put its opening back two months. When the residents realized that drainage system had taken up the starting money, they pitched in and helped Bailey open.
Ever since, Bailey, who is married to a Cherokee Nation citizen, has tried to bring the community good coffee in a place that feels like home.
“I want you to feel comfortable, not like you’re visiting a business, but like you’re meeting with family,” she said.
Everything within the shop was built from the ground up. And keeping within the spirit of ingenuity, Bailey helps local artists by displaying their works. Customers also bring in their artwork or things that reminded them of the eatery. To show her appreciation, Bailey gives them a discount and a forever home for their art on her wall.
Local crafts and local products are also important to the Stomping Grounds crew.
“We make 95 percent of everything here in the store. I didn’t milk the cow, but I was in on the roast. All of our syrups were made from scratch, and we make the cream here. We try to keep everything as close to raw as possible since it’s more healthy,” Bailey said.
From the art to coffee, the shop expresses its personality in everything. The top two coffee flavors for the shop are Jewel and Jinx, named after customers who frequent it. Jinx constantly came in to buy his wife, Jewel, a coffee every morning, and then other customers would come in and ask for whatever she was getting. The shop held a survey for the best coffee, and with more than 100 entries Jewel’s drink won.
Stomping Grounds also has special sales. Customer Appreciation Day occurs twice a year, first in April for its anniversary and then six months later in October. Bailey also posts occasional flash sales on Facebook. Flash sales are rapid half-off sales on extra products. Many of the products go fast, so Bailey encourages to keep an eye out for her social media posts.
Hours are 5:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday and 5:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
