SOUTH COFFEYVILLE, Okla. – Cherokee Nation officials on Feb. 2 held a welcoming party at the Native American Fellowship Inc. Community Center for executives with the Texas-based company Star Pipe, who plan to bring 250 jobs to Nowata County with a foundry in South Coffeyville.
The plant will manufacture castings for municipal water supplies for transportation and distribution of water and wastewater.
Career Services Executive director Diane Kelley said her department help bring Star Pipe to northeast Oklahoma.
“Career Services is one of the partners who worked with the state Department of Commerce in meeting with the Star Pipe foundry group to try to entice them to relocate here to South Coffeyville,” she said. “We presented a presentation on what we could bring to the table along with the workforce, the vo-tech (schools) and all the other employment partners in the area. We’ve worked with them for several months now on this economic development venture, and we were very excited when we found out they were going to locate here.”
Kelley said her staff has also worked with Star Pipe with on-the-job training contracts.
“We’ve got some clients that have been hired out there at the foundry. We’re excited about them being here and excited about the future here in this community,” she said.
Secretary of State Chuck Hoskin said the CN thought Star Pipe would be good for the county because it makes pipes and that business is doing well. He added that an existing foundry in South Coffeyville helped.
“They wanted to consolidate operations. It was a good facility and this is a strong community. Star Pipe saw something in this community, so Cherokee Nation helped bring them here,” he said. “So 250 good paying jobs is something to celebrate.”
Principal Chief Bill John Baker, Deputy Chief S. Joe Crittenden, Chief of Staff Chuck Hoskin, Cherokee Nation Businesses Executive Vice President Chuck Garrett and Tribal Councilors Victoria Vazquez and Dick Lay, as well as several city and county representatives attended the event.
Star Pipe General Manager Bill Nestel thanked everyone for the warm welcome.
“There’s still more work needed on the overall business plan. We’re hoping to hold the groundbreaking soon,” he said.
Tribal officials said jobs created by the Cherokee Casino South Coffeyville and the future Star Pipe Foundry was welcome news to Nowata County residents because the county is listed as one of the poorer counties in the United States.
