HACN to accept applications for Shade, Sequoyah Heights additions
TAHLEQUAH – The Housing Authority of the Cherokee Nation has announced it will soon accept applications for rental properties in the Shade Addition in Hulbert and the Sequoyah Heights Addition in Tahlequah.
The sites will offer housing units for elder Native Americans ages 62 and older.
Construction continues on the Shade Addition. The homes will be built through the Rental Properties program of the HACN. Each unit will include about 660 square feet with a living area, kitchen, bathroom and bedroom. Parks, a post office and a senior citizens center are short walks from the addition.
“Weather has been a factor and surely will continue to have an impact on our progress,” said Erna Reeves, HACN deputy director. “We started site work on the project in August. We have pads built for all eight of the houses. We will start pouring footings next week, weather permitting. After that, construction should progress rapidly.”
Applications for Shade Addition become available Nov. 7 beginning at 9 a.m. at the Proctor Heights office, 900 Bassham Drive in Hulbert.
“We anticipate that the project will be completed and ready for occupancy no later than next summer, 2020,” Reeves said.
Applications for Sequoyah Heights Addition will be available Nov. 8 at 9 a.m. at the Gregg Glass Building, 120 McSpadden Court in Tahlequah.
To meet application requirements, a household member must be a citizen of a federally recognized tribe. Household income must be at or below 80 percent of the national median income guidelines and the rents charged will be based on family income. Criminal background checks will be conducted on all household members age 18 or older, and other eligibility requirements will apply according to the HACN Rental Programs Policy.
HACN staff will be available to distribute and accept applications for single-bedroom units. The first 20 completed applications for Shade Addition will be accepted. The first 30 finished applications for Sequoyah Heights will be accepted. A completed application must be signed by the head of household and spouse.
