TAHLEQUAH – The National High School Athletic Coaches Association announced on Feb. 11 that Sequoyah High School softball coach and Cherokee Nation citizen Jeff Turtle is a finalist for the 2020 NHSACA National Coach of the Year.

Eight finalists from across the nation will be honored on July 23 at an awards banquet at the NHSACA National Convention at the Lincoln Station Great Hall in Lincoln, Nebraska.

At the banquet, the National Coach of the Year awards will be named in 19 sports categories.

Turtle was nominated by Oklahoma’s High School Coaches Association for the award, which is based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors, championship years and winning percentage.

Turtle has coached at Sequoyah for 25 years and has coached fast pitch softball for 15 of them, compiling a 511-112 record. His 2018 team won the Class 3A state title. He’s also led teams to two second-place, state title finishes in 2012 and 2013 along with 12 consecutive state tournament appearances.

“We know it is a great honor just to be nominated by your peers,” Turtle said on being nominated. “You have to have great young ladies come through the program to be considered for honors like this, and we are very fortunate here at Sequoyah High School in Tahlequah to have had this happen.”

Nominees and finalists are evaluated by coaching experts using a sports-specific rubric to assign points in each category.

The NHSACA is the oldest coaches association in the nation, formed by coaches for coaches and has been recognizing national coaches of the year since 1978.
