Election Commission releases 2021 voting info

TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation Election Commission officials on Dec. 15 released their timeline for the tribe’s 2021 election period.

According to the release, March 31 is the last day to register to vote in the June 5 general election and the July 24 runoff election, if necessary.

The Tribal Council seats open for this upcoming election cycle are Districts 2, 4, 5, 7, 9, 10, 11, 15, and one At-Large Council seat. Eligible CN citizens interested in running for office may pick up a candidate packet. The filing period for candidates will begin at 8 a.m. on Feb. 1 and will continue until 5 p.m. on Feb. 4. Candidates must file their declarations of candidacy with the EC Office at 17763 S. Muskogee Ave.

CN citizens who are at least 18 years old prior to or on the day of the election may apply to become a registered voter. Tribal citizens who are 17 years old and can show that their birthdays are prior to the date of the election shall be allowed to register to vote.

CN citizens who have never been registered to vote or who are not registered in the districts of their residences, as well as citizens who are registered but need to change their registration information may apply by completing a voter registration application on or before March 31.
Absentee request forms will be accepted beginning on Jan. 4 through April 16 for the general election. Registered voters only have to apply once to receive the absentee ballots for the general and runoff elections.

Voter registration and absentee applications are available at the EC Office and online at https://election.cherokee.org. Any CN citizen who would like to receive the voter registration application may also request the form in via email, phone or fax. To call the EC, dial 918-458-5899 or toll-free at 1-800-353-2895. For a fax request, dial 918-458-6101. Send mail requests to P.O. Box 1188, Tahlequah OK 74465-1188. For email requests, send to election-commission@cherokee.org. Forms may be returned by mail, fax, email or in person to the EC Office.
