TAHLEQUAH – The Cherokee Nation’s Emergency Medical Services was recently named the recipient of the Saint Francis Hospital C.T. Thompson Award for Excellence in Trauma Care.

The award, named in honor of Saint Francis physician Dr. C.T. Thompson, is presented annually to recognize medical professionals who provide outstanding trauma care and treat their patients with the highest compassion, skill and dedication.

CN EMS was selected for the award based on a series of events where individuals with life-threatening injuries were treated and transported, and the treatment provided exceeded hospital expectations.

“I am very proud of our staff,” CN EMS Director Jimmy Summerlin said. “We continue to measure ourselves and work on performance improvement and best practices. I congratulate our staff for their dedication and efforts to provide the best possible care to those we serve.”

CN EMS was the first EMS ground service in Oklahoma, and the first tribal EMS in the nation to achieve accreditation through the Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services. The program has been accredited since March of 2005 and is recognized as one of the top agencies in the nation.

With 45 employees and three areas of focus, including ambulance services, training and 911 communications, the agency reaches a service area of more than 1,032 square miles and on average will answer more than 5,500 calls per year.
