TAHLEQUAH – Cherokee Nation citizens 60 years of age and older are invited to participate in the fourth annual Cherokee Nation Elders Summit on Sept. 25-26 in Tahlequah and Claremore.

On Sept. 25, elders are invited to visit the Tahlequah Armory Municipal Center from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and on Sept. 26, the elders summit will take place at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“As a tribe we strive to show respect to our elders in every way that we can,” Deputy Principal Chief S. Joe Crittenden said. “Our goal with the elders summit is to not only show our respect, but to give them an outlet for fellowship, resources and information that they may not always know how to find. It is such a great day spent with our staff, being of service to others, sharing a few smiles and laughs, and making a few memories with our elders.”

According to a CN press release, elders play an important role in the Cherokee culture as the foundation of families and the caretakers of our traditions and heritage. The release also states that since its inception in 2015, the Elders Summit has not only promoted the importance of Cherokee elders, but served as an information hub for elder services.

This year the summit will be focused on the theme “Family: A Bridge to the Future, A Link to the Past,” which is a continuation of the Cherokee National Holiday theme.

Both days will include a free lunch for attendees as well as resource booths with information on elder abuse, resources and CN programs.

Elders are encouraged to RSVP to Glenda McClanahan at glenda-mclanahan@cherokee.org or by calling 918-453-5000, ext. 7052.
