The Cherokee Phoenix Breakdown is back with its first episode in 2021 of the Cherokee Phoenix's virtual roundtable discussion that highlights significant topics in the Cherokee Nation and Indian Country, and elaborates on their impact as it relates to Native people. In this episode, we are joined by Cherokee Nation Language Department Executive Director Howard Paden as well as Cherokee Nation Language Program Manager Roy Boney. This episode touches on the history of the Cherokee syllabary and the tribe's plan to celebrate its 200th anniversary of its creation.

Two hundred years ago, the brilliant statesman and inventor Sequoyah presented the Cherokee syllabary to the Cherokee Nation. This year we are honoring the bicentennial of Sequoyah's historic achievement that brought widespread literacy to our tribe.�
